Pigments
for ceramics
Rare Earths are used to produce colors in the ceramics industry:
either as an opaque white for decoration (cerium oxide & OPALINE),
or to make colored pigments:
- yellow
(praseodymium),
- violet
(neodymium),
- orange
(yttrium),
- burgundy
(cerium/praseodymium).
|
Tetravalent Rare Earths are used for their
specificity: the transfer of oxygen/praseodymium charge (IV) to
a zircon network (ZrSiO4) is the origin of the most intense and
stable yellow available for ceramic dyes at high cooking temperatures.
Colors obtained in that manner are stable at high temperatures:
up to 1400°C for praseodymium yellows.
